New Market Battlefield State Historical ParkJacob Bushong's Birthday Party
11:00am to 4:00pm Costumed volunteers interpret birthday traditions of the 19th century and show how members of the neighborhood came together to celebrate with the Bushong family. A period menu, including hand-cranked ice cream, will be prepared for the party. Period songs and games will add to the festive nature of the event. 11:00am to 4:00pm Taking place in front of the Park’s Hall of Valor Museum, the Sunday School Fair recreates a typical community event of 1850’s New Market. Family focused event features games of skill and chance, 19th century refreshments, and handwork items. Pies donated by area restaurants will be auctioned to benefit the Park’s educational programs. New Market Battlefield State Historical ParkSpirits of New Market
7:00pm to 4:00pm Costumed historical interpreters portraying Union and Confederate soldiers, Virginia Military Institute Cadets, and members of the Bushong family take visitors back in time to the aftermath of the battle that ushered in a year of death and destruction in the Shenandoah Valley. Guided lantern tour centers on the Bushong Farm and the battlefield made famous by the charge of the VMI Cadets. Tours begin at 7 PM and every 15 minutes until 8:45 PM. 10:00am to 4:00pm Costumed historical interpreters at the Park’s Bushong Farm share traditions of Christmas in the Shenandoah Valley during the 1850s. Features music, storytelling, period games, and ornament-making. Civil War reenactors depict the hardships and improvisations that soldiers experienced during Christmas far from home.
